Are you too comfortable?

A few years back I went to the Blogalicious conference with my girlfriend. I'm a pretty quiet person to those that don't know me. Before I left, my daughter told me, "ok mom. you go out there and don't be shy, make some new friends". I thought that was extremely funny. Did she know I was already trying to work on not being so shy? I mean, I did volunteer at this conference which meant I worked around people I didn't know. What's even funnier is I was at the welcome table of all places, so I had to be friendly. I was nervous!!! Having to talk to people I didn't know and now my daughter has charged me with making new friends. LOL Well I did it! And successfully I may add.

Being a photographer, I am faced often times with working in a room full of people I don't know while shooting events or weddings. Do I still get nervous after just about four years in this business? ABSOLUTELY!!!! Remember I'm shy! But if I never ever stepped out of my comfort zone, even while shaking and sweating life like crazy, I wouldn't be able to meet all of these fantastic clients I have bonded with.

I am NOT a fan of winter! I repeat... I am NOT a fan of winter. I hate being cold because it takes me so long to warm up. And then there is the snow factor. URGH what a mess it is. But here comes my client, "Tara!! I need to do a winter shoot when it's snowing!" I'm thinking is she crazy! She knows I hate being cold AND I hate the snow. Talk about being uncomfortable. Of course, I went through with it because she had a vision that I wanted to honor. So we sat out one Saturday afternoon. OH MY GOSH!!!! It was so beautiful. I could have never expected to be so happy after being so uncomfortable.

I say all this to say, sometimes you just have to do it. Be uncomfortable. Go to a place where you don't know anyone. Talk to people. You never know, you could meet a new friend or discover something remarkable. (SN: I became friends with this client over a year ago at a party we were both working, simply because I went to go talk to her randomly. LOL ok it wasn't random. She's a dj and she was JAMMIN!!!
